Khichdi

Recipe from my aunt

Ingredients:

  • ghee (best)/oil – 1-2 tbsp
  • Cumin – 1 tsp
  • mustard – 1 tsp
  • Methi seeds – 1 tsp
  • Black jeera – 1 tsp
  • Fennel/Sombu/Saunf – 1 tsp
  • curry leaves – 3-4
  • green chillies – 2-3 (as per taste level)
  • Toor Dal – 1/4 cup
  • Yellow moong dal – 1/4 cup
  • Chana dal – less than 1/4 cup
  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Vegetables like (1 big potato, 1 big tomato, 1 big carrot, others as per choice)
  • Salt – 1 tbsp (as per taste)
  • Water – 6 cups
  • Cilantro
  • Pressure cooker

Preparation:

  1. Wash and soak toor dal, moong dal and chana dal for 30 mins
  2. Now take a pressure cooker, add ghee.
  3. When the ghee is hot, add cumin, mustard, methi seeds, black jeera, fennel, curry leaves and green chilles and fry for 30 secs
  4. Add the vegetables and fry till for 10 mins on medium flame.
  5. When done, add salt and rice
  6. Mix everything and add water
  7. Close the lid and wait till 3 whistles.
  8. When done put some cilantro
  9. Serve hot with pickle of choice
